Harry Reid Speaks

There has been moonbattery at the Democrat Convention, although the MSM has wisely ignored it. Such nuttiness does not make the Democrat Party look good and is unlikely to persuade independents.

Senator Harry Reid went far left to find red meat for the Democrat base:

For the past eight years, the man in the Oval Office has tipped his hat over his eyes, kicked back his chair, and snoozed at his desk. Charged with protecting our national interests, he slept on duty while his vice president conspired with oil industry cronies. Tasked with cutting off funding to terrorists, he slept on duty while oil shortages worsened, oil prices soared, and dollars by the ton were delivered to terrorists’ banks in Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. Faced with a new kind of war, this president and his vice president helped their friends the old-fashioned way: through war profiteering, tax cuts for billionaires, and in many cases out-and-out corruption.

There are honest answers to the problems we face, but they call for hard solutions and common sacrifices, the kind of sacrifices that this administration has only asked the American people to bear when it lined the pockets of the obscenely rich.

(At what income level does one become obscenely rich? Would John Kerry qualify? Jay Rockefeller? George Soros? Or is the term "obscenely rich," rather a name that socialist idiots call rich people they don't like?)

Does anyone seriously believe Harry Reid's cartoon version of the war in Iraq? That Bush and Cheney would send America's fine men and women in the military to die in Iraq just so they and their friends might get rich? Where is the evidence?

But notice what Reid thinks is the solution to the supposed problem of oil: sacrifice. Yes, sacrifice is the Democrat answer to every problem. He praises Jimmy Carter for getting it right.

President Carter warned us about it in the 1970s when he proposed real solutions—conservation, fuel efficiency, and alternative fuels—to what he correctly named the “moral equivalent of war.” His proposals were ridiculed by Republicans who forgot that both Presidents Nixon and Ford had joined him in calling for America’s energy independence.

To Carter and Reid the solution is that Americans must do with less, with their collective sacrifice directed and coordinated by our wise masters in Washington, D.C. -- people like, oh, Jimmy Carter and Harry Reid.

The real solution is laissez-faire capitalism. Get the government out of energy production. Eliminate all impediments erected by the state and let the market work. Prices would plummet to all-time lows and gas would flow.

But we can't have that. Americans would be more productive and richer -- an environmental disaster! Worse, they would be independent and happy, living their lives without direction from our benevolent masters in Washington, D.C.

And where would that leave people like Harry Reid and Jimmy Carter? They would no longer be important, would they?

Read Reid's speech, and then consider: he is one of the most powerful men in America.

Yes, it is frightening.

Yes, I'd say a good majority of them (i.e., Leftists) do seriously believe it. Leftists have strained themselves to paint Cheney as this unique evil mastermind behind Bush and the war in Iraq. They claim Cheney got Bush to manufacture a war against Saddam, and have now extended it for many years, in order line their friends’ pockets in the military and oil industries. But the fact is that the Islamic fanatics have been wagging war on us for many, many years, and our so-called leaders did next to nothing about it. The reality is, Bush and Cheney are fighting the wrong war. There is a war to be fought; they’ve just chose not to fight it.

Joseph is right. The Left (and the libertarians) see this war as an imperialistic war of aggression waged against innocent Muslims for the purposes of stealing their oil, and all of it to benefit the oil companies; ie Haliburton and the like. This is standard Leftist thought. The Left also adamantly denies that Islam is the root cause of the conflict.

To the Left, it is the West in general and America in particular that has angered Muslims. The West and America are greedy, capitalist, oil consuming racists that discriminate against innocent Muslims who are cast in the role of innocent 3rd world peoples. Hollywood has been consistent in projecting this image.

Witness yet another Leftist, anti-America, pro-Islam movie that is out now in theaters: Traitor. It is about a black Muslim undercover cop who infiltrates a terrorist cell and essentially learns that it is American racism that causes terrorism. Debbie Schlussel reviews it at her site. Schlussel is a Conservative and prone to all the standard Conservative errors but her review porvides enough information to see how the Left views Islam and the "War On Terrorism."

As I keep saying, I hate Conservatives but nothing turns my stomach worse than Leftism and Leftists.

I think you're both right, but it amazes me at how reality one must evade to believe the Marxist-Leninist line that the cause of war is capitalist imperialism. Or one must be remarkably uninformed. If you listen to what the enemy says, it is plain that they are bringing the war to us regardless of what we do because that's what Allah wants.

Andrew Bernstein said in an interview somewhere that much of the Left can be described as psychotic (I think it was on a Prodos interview). I think the Left's complete detachment from reality is the logical conclusion of post-modern philosophy. If you preach that the mind is impotent, well at some point you're going to get the Daily Kos.

The thing which is hard to fully grasp for me though is the suicidal self loathing of the Left. Consistent Muslims keep telling us that they intend to kill and subjugate us. And they tell us this in the most explicit way. Hell they demonstrated it to us on 9/11. You would think that self-preservation would kick in and Leftists would say "Holy shit, these Muslims are serious."

Also, since the Left supports gays, and sexual liberation, and rights for women, etc (at least in comparison the Right), you would think that Leftists would realize that they themselves will be the first targets of Muslim rage as Islam despises cultural liberalism (as do cultural Christians, but that's another story). But cultural self-loathing is part and parcel to Leftist thought. They can't see past it. So they are thus blind to the seething hatred and destruction that Islam represents. Even worse, they take its side.

Its all so bizarre that sometimes I just don't see how it can be possible. But it is.

Myrhaf,

I think to understand why the left accepts such theories and "ideas" that seem so anti-reality, so obviously wrong, you have to keep in mind the anti-reality of their moral code.

The left primarily hates this country because they are guided by altruism, the doctrine that says that you must live for others and particularly those most in need. Now, since this nation is the wealthiest and most powerful in history, the left feels guilty for being a part of it--and not moving to those part of the world they extol, such as Africa. Instead of dealing with their guilt, they turn that emotion against that which they believe is causing it, America, and they rage, rage against it, many from their posh homes and offices.

This is big part of the root of the left's evasions. They'll do anything to not face that guilt and irrational anger, including make up conspiracy theories about who caused 9/11--it's was Bush-Cheney, don't you know?
